Environmental Commission
The Commission for Conservation of the Environment, established in 1971, consists of five to nine members appointed by the Mayor with the approval of the Board of Trustees, for "the preservation and improvement of the quality of the natural and manmade environment within the Village" and to foster environmental information and education. Commission members also serve as a Tree Board to monitor the health of Village trees along rights-of-way and in the parks.
Since 1989, the Village has been awarded "Tree City USA" as determined by the New York State DEC Forestry Division and the National Arbor Day Foundation. The award is based on a program of continuing tree care and maintenance and legislation to protect the health and development of municipal trees along streets, in parks and at construction sites. The Commission organizes educational programs pertaining to aspects of our environment and natural resources.
